I LOVE these ideas! I agree that paying the kids to help you with your job is wonderful - it creates that "team" environment that you're all working together to make something happen. Our kids get a regular allowance just for their participation in household chores - we sort-of have them on a weekly schedule. We do pay them extra allowance for doing things "above and beyond" like washing the cars, major yard work, etc. (Actually, we don't "pay" them an allowance because I never have the cash - we put it in their "banking account" that I keep up with in Quickbooks :).

I really like the ticket idea - it reminds me of our screen time solution a little - we take their screen-time dollars away for bad attitudes and behavior. And I think the field trips are wonderful rewards - they provide you with a great opportunity to get out of the house and spend quality time with the kids (not to mention getting a yummy slice of cheese cake!).

Thanks so much for dropping by the site and especially for leaving your comments! Hope you'll share more great ideas with us at familybriefs.com!

I read David Owens' book along with another one (can't recall the name) that suggested pretty much the opposite. But I was able to pull great ideas from both.
I pay my kids allowance based on the fact that they're home all day with me (homeschooled) and help me with my paying job, which is to take care of two toddler boys. This amount is based on age and experience and overall willingness to be helpful. My almost 7-yo dd gets $6/week (she's extremely helpful) and my 5-yo ds gets $3.
Then I use a ticket system for their chores. They can earn at least 4 tickets a day: morning self-care, chore time, school, and bedtime self-care. More tickets can be earned for doing special jobs and going above and beyond. Tickets can be taken away for bad attitudes, etc. At the end of the month if they've accumulated a total that equals 4 tickets per day, we go on a special field trip or out for a special treat. This month they're keeping their eyes on the goal of going to Eli's Cheesecake Factory to watch cheesecakes being made and then having a slice to eat!

My daughter Melanie(3) also wants a party with watermelons~ So a WaterMELANIE party it is. Thankfully, it is in June~still watermelon themed items are hard to find!!!!! I 'd also like to see the poem if you still have it. We are already on the lookout for anything watermelon flavored for the treat bags. Thanks for all your advice!!!!!!!!!!

How about something he could enjoy with a few friends, like movie tickets or a gift card for Chuckie Cheese? That way it is something he can enjoy with friends and it makes for a special night out.

I don't know which radio controlled helicopter he is talking about, but I think this radio controlled dragonfly is just the coolest thing ever! They have some other great toys at the Discovery Store, if that's up his alley.

Wow, that is a lot of popcorn. Wow.

My son was in cub scouts (and is now almost an eagle scout), so I can sympathize with you on the whole popcorn thing. Drove me crazy for years. :)

Anyway, his favorite gifts for selling were always gift cards, espcially to Wal Mart or somewhere where he could buy camping supplies and outdoor gear for scouts. You might think about some kind of scouting-related item that he might need, like a good sleeping bag, a tent, a cool headlamp, etc. My son enjoyed going to the store and picking stuff out on his own. Just a thought.

Seems the kids here in my part of Michigan enjoy gift cards, maybe from the local movie theathers? It could include popcorn and a drinks for maybe up to 4 kids? Or Best Buy, where they can get almost anything...Or Home Depot, where there are amazing projects for kids such as bird feeders to build,, art projects ect? Or maybe coupon books from good old McDonalds??? Or Red Robin, or somewhere they might go with his family thats on the cheap and easy level??? Just some thoughts

My list of 7 childhood memories is shared [with one photo of a toy that's nearly 50 years old...come by and say 'hi' if you can find time. I'd love to have you visit with me]

Hi! I had that happen to me once, on somebody *else's* blog ... someone replied to what I had said (I never EVER say bad stuff, I'm of the "if you don't have something good to say, don't say anything at all" kind) and criticized me. I replied in a kind way and then they took THAT and tore it to pieces and misinterpreted it and bashed me AGAIN.

I think I've learned something since then because I tried to explain myself but it only got worse and I think it taught me that meanspirited people will say what they're gonna say and believe what they're gonna believe regardless of what I do. Explaining isn't gonna help me, it's like talking to a brick wall. I can totally relate to how much this can HURT! I need to remember there are all kinds of people out there and, especially with the anonymity of the internet, they will tend to say things they might not say if you were standing right in front of them. I would say to chalk it up to "this one's a wacko, look how they're treating a stranger ... wow, they must really be miserable" and not respond.

GREAT QUESTION by the way!

Hugs,
Col
